Why get paid in XMR
Three practical reasons freelancers ask for Monero instead of PayPal or bank transfer: no account to freeze (a wallet is just software), no 3–5% platform rake plus chargebacks, and private amounts and counterparties — your client list isn't sitting in a payment processor's database. For writing, design, translation, and code work sold to privacy-minded clients, XMR is often the path of least resistance.
The 15-minute setup
-
Install a wallet you control
Cake Wallet (mobile) or Feather Wallet (desktop) are the standard picks. Write down the seed phrase offline and never share it.
-
Generate a subaddress per client
Monero wallets can create unlimited subaddresses tied to the same wallet. Give each client their own — payments stay separated, and no client can see what the others paid you.
-
Publish your rate in XMR or fiat
Quote in USD/EUR and convert at payment time using a live rate (our live XMR rates page works), or quote directly in XMR. Converting at invoice time keeps accounting simple.
Invoicing and pricing in XMR
- Agree the fiat value, settle in XMR. "0.5 XMR at today's rate" beats arguing about whose chart to use. Lock the rate at the moment of invoice or payment — say so in writing.
- Milestones for larger jobs. 30–50% upfront is normal in crypto freelance work; it filters out clients who were never going to pay.
- Confirmations are fast. Monero blocks land roughly every 2 minutes; most people accept payment after a handful of confirmations.
Where the crypto-paying work is
- Cryptogrind — a freelance marketplace that pays exclusively in Bitcoin, with multisig escrow so neither side can run off with the funds. Free to list services; 4% fee on completed escrow transactions. BTC earnings swap to XMR in minutes via any no-KYC exchange in our comparison.
- r/Jobs4Bitcoins — a long-running subreddit (~27k members) where clients post BTC-paying gigs and freelancers offer services. Informal; use escrow for anything beyond pocket money.
- Direct clients. The best rates are usually off-platform: Monero-community projects, privacy tools, and crypto publications often pay in XMR directly. Watch the CCS (Community Crowdfunding System) for funded work, though that route is geared toward developers and longer proposals.
Avoiding scams and chargebacks
- Use escrow for new clients. Platforms with multisig escrow (like Cryptogrind) hold the coins until both sides confirm — that's your chargeback protection, since crypto payments are final.
- Never pay to get hired. "Deposit 0.1 XMR to unlock the job" is always a scam.
- Watermark deliverables for design/writing until the final payment clears.
- Keep records. Save invoices, chat logs, and transaction IDs. If a dispute ever lands in front of an arbitrator or a tax office, you'll be glad you did.
Turning XMR into spending money
When you need fiat, swap XMR → BTC → your local off-ramp, or sell P2P. Our XMR to BTC guide covers the no-KYC swap route step by step, and the P2P comparison covers selling directly to people.
